The NAIT program, which is the only one in Canada
approved by the American-based National Court
Reporters Association, provides training to write
machine shorthand at a minimum speed of 225
words per minute. Capturing every word spoken by everyone during a legal proceeding such as an examination for discovery, or a public board of inquiry, a convention, or a conference, the reporter records the events of today for the benefit of tomorrow. In legal proceedings, the printed copy, or transcript, forms the official record which will be used by lawyers and judges in their future deliberations, or by litigants who want to appeal a decision.

New and exciting technology, computer-aided transcription (CAT), captures stenographic notes on a computer disk, and instantly translates them into English text which can be displayed on computer monitors or on large projection screens, or can be printed out into a conventional transcript. Known as "realtime," this highly specialized skill is particularly helpful in providing deaf or hearing-impaired people with the same access to information as hearing persons.
